Scottish and Southern energy (SSE) are the UK's second largest electricity and gas generation company, their activities range from managing power stations to maintaining their national supply network which delivers energy to millions of homes and businesses throughout the country.

SSE have a strong vigorous focus on the health and safety of their employees, and in the latest phase of their training they were keen to develop new ways of engaging with their teams to encourage them to adopt safer driving practices.

The Challenge

• To provide a fresh and innovative way of looking at the subject which participants will remember for longer.
• To stress the importance of developing a safe driving culture within the organisation.
• To highlight that safe driving is a task in its own right and should not be exempt from the organisation’s focus on health and safety
• To encourage delegates to consider their own attitude towards driving and assess their competency in this area.
• To clearly link driving into organisational values and to stress that safe operation of company vehicles is not optional.

Our Solution

Working closely with SSE, we designed a resource which gave their managers a toolkit to facilitate short (60-minute) training sessions with their teams. As well as a detailed workshop plan, a series of interactive group exercises and practical advice for trainers, we created a series of five animated films each focusing on a different element of driving:

• “Edward Shears”, focuses on the fact that driving is a safety-critical task in its own right.
• “Angie’s Commute”, examines our differing perceptions of risk and how this affects our driving behaviour.
• “The Family Down the Street”, demonstrates how misplaced confidence in our own driving abilities contributes to unsafe practice.
• “Spotting the Signals”, looks at the impact fatigue can have on driving.
• “Was it Worth it”, provides a hard-hitting finale to the session by showing the serious consequences of unsafe driving.

Results

SSE are delighted with the finished results and “The Road to Safer Driving” is recognised as being a highly effective tool to raise awareness and influence staff behaviour. SSE are keen that the resource continues to be viewed and experienced by as many people as possible.
