Football Stewards Training - Blended Solution

English Football Stewards have long been recognised as being amongst the best in the world. They are the most visible of club staff and in times of crisis they protect spectators and save lives. They also have a fundamental impact on the fans experience on a match day.

One of the main reasons for this world wide admiration is the quality of training which is delivered to all football stewards. Which is why the football authorities (The Football Association, The Premier League, The Football League and The Football Safety Officers Association, in conjunction with the Football Licensing Authority) approached Juice Learning to revise and update their existing training package.

The Challenge

In a wide ranging brief Juice were asked to produce a training resource to meet a number of requirements:

To design a syllabus to meet the requirements set by the NVQ Level 2 curriculum (Stewarding at Spectator Events).
Produce a multi-media training pack that can be used in every football club to deliver training to the highest level.
Deliver a series of facilitator-lead events for trainers from all of our football clubs, to introduce them to the new resources and show them how to get the most from them.
To provide a resource that represents the Football Authorities ongoing commitment to supporting the highest standard of stewarding at all of our football clubs.

Our Solution

During the course of this 5-month project Juice have worked closely with the football authorities to produce the "ON THE BALL" training pack which contains:

A series of six three-hour training sessions with comprehensive trainer notes, covering a diverse range of subject matter including: Spectator Safety, Fire Awareness, Customer Service, First Aid, Crowd Management, Disability Awareness, Conflict Management and Teamwork.
A series of films shot at six very different football matches across the country during the thrilling closing stages of the 2009 ñ 2010 season.
The resulting Fly on the wall style documentaries compliment the training by centring the learning on real stewards handling a variety of genuine challenges.
A slide show designed to guide the trainer and their delegates through each session.
A wide range of guided learning activities including: group discussion, role play, team exercises, games, quizzes and classroom based activities.

To launch the training resource, we delivered a series of five facilitator-lead workshops throughout the country. During each day-long session we provided guidance and training tips, delivered a section of the resource and invited feedback to discuss how best to utilise the resource at club level.

Results

Following a national tour of launch events, the On the Ball resources now forms the basis for steward training at over 100 football clubs in England and Wales. On the Ball will provide an invaluable aid to ensuring that the training and standard of stewarding in England continues to be the envy of the world.
