As part of their constant efforts to deliver safety excellence, EDF Energy approached Juice Learning to design and deliver a memorable event to 100 of their contractors to explore the reasons why EDF all of its partners should work towards a H&S culture of excellence. To achieve this we examined: The Moral case, The Business case and The Legal case.
Commencing with a business update from Andy Richards (Director of Coal Operations) we delivered a powerful opening scene depicting the immediate aftermath of a serious incident. This was followed by a series of discreet break-out sessions, each of which allowed the delegates to focus on the three core themes:
“Was the accident the fault of the individual or the organisation?”
In a dramatic and absorbing session our facilitator and the “legal-team” challenged pre-conceptions and delivered an insight into the magnitude and personal impact of a real legal proceeding.
“What is safety worth to your business?”
Our facilitator introduced various concepts and tools to go beyond the immediate and obvious cost of an accident and uncover the harm or benefit that safety has on the delegates own organisation.
“The conference in July was a significant event, our second Supplier Engagement Day, aimed at bring our suppliers closer to our business and to understand our business drivers and challenges, ultimately with the intent of allowing them to understand the commitment expected by us of them, but to also demonstrate that it is a two way street.
The H&S element was absolutely about the shared and often grey area of line accountability between supplier and customer, the three drivers - moral, legal and business really worked and hit home to everyone. The team's ability to take my thoughts and structure them into the day was excellent and I rapidly learnt to trust the team. The day was run smoothly, facilitated exceptionally well, bridging the segments between H&S, Environment and Business Performance Updates, along with future challenges.
The feedback from the attendees was excellent with staff and contractors able to identify with the characters and take on board the H&S message without it being forced upon them in the "normal" style.
On every occasion I have worked with you, the organisation has been professional and driven to deliver time frames. Ideas have been translated into truly impacting presentations, allowing leaders and managers of the business to communicate expectations and cultural behaviours without the use of PowerPoint.”
