Toolbox Talks is a term used to describe a short and very specific briefing delivered in small groups usually at a working site. The subject matter can vary hugely, but the content of these briefings is usually centred on an aspect of safety – so the effectiveness of these briefings is critical to the health and well-being of staff. The team at Lafarge recognised that there was an opportunity to improve the quality of the briefings by developing the skills of the managers and supervisors whose job it is to deliver them to their colleagues.
This provided us with a great opportunity to practise what we were going to preach! The challenge was to design a short, concise and highly engaging session that could be delivered at a wide-range of locations, so our delegates could do exactly the same.
We approached the project with all the creativity and enthusiasm that we’ve become known for and produced a series of films on location at Dowlow Quarry in Derbyshire which Matt Cleve (Learning & Development Director) incorporated into a session designed to help our delegates:
Our Facilitators Andy Thomas and Scott Worsfold then delivered a national training tour delivering at 12 different sites from Dartford to Durham, ensuring that everyone who has the responsibility to do so would be able to deliver these critical talks in a highly effective way.
Over a four month period, the training was successfully delivered to all of STH’s 600 staff, and after a thorough period of assessment we are delighted to announce that South Tyneside Homes have received a CIPD “Equality and Diversity in the Workplace” Award.
96% of attendees felt that the course helped them deliver important messages clearly and with confidence, develop ways to plan and prepare for delivering toolbox talks and engage with staff to encourage participation in toolbox talks.
“The training has been very well received by all the attendees, and the feedback on the day has not only been great but also anecdotal evidence suggests that our managers have been able to use what they have learnt and make their presentations more engaging and interactive.
Juice have facilitated the courses well and have also been very organised and proactive on the project management side, meeting some very tight timescales.”
“For me personally this was the best learning experience I have had since joining Lafarge. I know most people attending did not relish the thought of standing up in front of the group at the start of the session but we all grew in confidence throughout the day.”
“A very well thought through and put together training with excellent levels of practical participation and discussion and group involvement. The whole day led up nicely to individual presentation which felt more comfortable giving. Thank you very much for a great day.”
