Having established a productive working relationship through involvement in the annual Safety Health and Environment Conferences, Juice were asked by the energy provider to design further training on the issue of safe driving. With Road Traffic Accidents being of particular focus, SSE envisaged a training resource that could be rolled out to their entire workforce, both out on-site and in office workplaces.
The result was a Juice-designed 90-minute workshop that had five animations at its core, which were used in conjunction with a series of interactive exercises emphasising five key learning objectives. The use of animation was necessary due to the requirement to depict road traffic incidents and the contributing poor driving behaviour. Recreating that action safely in live action was not possible, so animation was chosen as an effective and engaging medium. The client was extremely supportive of this decision and backed the idea to make the animations gritty, dark and somewhat macabre to make the learning more memorable. All five animations were undertaken in different styles including traditional 2D, 3D CGI and illustrated motion graphics. The films ‘The Dream of Edward Shears’ and ‘The Family Down The Street’, written by Mike Ingham and animated by Mark Davies, were inspired by Tim Burton’s poetry and illustrations.
This resource was Highly Recommended in the Health and Safety category at IVCA 2009 (International Video Communications Awards).
"Feedback is very positive - with the 'bold' use of language stimulating debate. The use of animation was a first for SSE and we believe it has made the material more accessible to a wider range of audiences than an 'instructional' treatment. The use of animation also allowed us to be more graphic than live action, which can tend to look amateurish within the budget levels normally available for projects such as this."
